Join an NIH Clinical Study
Study title: Natural History and Genetic Studies of Usher Syndrome
What can I expect if I join the study?
Participants who choose to come to NIH will undergo the following evaluations. (Click on any item for more details on that evaluation, or see a list of all evaluations on one page.)
- Genetic counseling
- Blood draw for genetic studies
- Eye examination
- Electroretinogram (ERG) to test the function of visual cells
- Fluorescein angiography, only if considered necessary, to evaluate the eye's blood vessels
- Hearing tests
- Vestibular testing for balance function
All patients, including those participating off-site, will be asked to return once for follow-up eye evaluation two to five years after the initial visit. The follow-up will take place at the site of the initial evaluation. Patients with Usher type 2 or 3 will also be asked to repeat their hearing tests at the same time.
